An ethical will originates in Judaism. In contrast to a legal will, which states what you want to happen to your worldly possessions, the ethical will outlines the life lessons and values you wish to pass on to those you leave behind. The startup ethical will zooms in specifically on your experience as a Founder - imagining a future version of yourself looking back on the Founder experience through different eyes.

There is no set format this must take but here are some questions to guide you:

• What are your regrets?
• What are your most important learnings?
• What are the hardest lessons you had to learn?
• How did it shape you?
• How did it shape those around you?
• When were the moments of greatest joy?
• What are you most proud of?
• Who was most important to you along the way?
• What was unique about your company and the way you ran it?
• What seems unimportant now that seemed important then?
• What advice do you wish you could give you back then?
• What do you believe to be true as a result of your experience?
• What do you want to be written on the gravestone of your company? Why?
